Ep 9: The DOJ’s Wet Hot Google Summer

What’s going on here?
The Justice Department is reportedly prepping an antitrust investigation of Google in a move that could set a new standard for U.S. regulation of Big Tech.

Antitrust law regulates the conduct and organization of business corporations, generally to promote fair competition for the benefit of consumers.

Why this is happening
Thanks to a steady regimen of creatine and tech investment, Google has taken a stranglehold on online ad-buying.

The case against Google: It’s tough out there for a young internet company hoping to gain popularity in any of Google’s many markets. Its products are immensely popular, and Google has built up a network of friends in D.C.

The necessary disclaimers: This DOJ investigation could come to nothing. It’s step one of a long, winding antitrust road.

The bottom line

  • The history: In the 1990s, the government made a case against Microsoft. While it came out without damage, Microsoft weathered a decade-long distraction that allowed then-startups like Google to get into.
  • Even if Google escapes the grasp of the DOJ, this could represent a meaningful change in its story.
