What’s going on here?

Not long ago, the number of enterprises with billion-dollar capitalization on Vietnam’s stock market could only be counted on fingers, but

• with the growth of the stock market,
• combined with a series of big names simultaneously listing,

that number increases sharply.

As of January 22, 2020, on all 3 exchanges HoSE, HNX, Upcom, there are 31 enterprises  (23 of which on HoSE) on the list, which sees an increase of 2, regarding Becamex and Vietnam Rubber Industry Group (GVR). The total capitalization of these 31 businesses is up to US$ 139 billion, accounting for 72% of Vietnam’s stock market total capitalization.

Who are on top?

1. VinGroupcontinues to hold the No. 1 position with nearly USD 16.8 billion.

2. Ranked closely behind is Vietcombank with USD 15 billion. Over the past year, Vietcombank has made a great leap in capitalization, increasing by about US $ 6 billion.

3. Meanwhile, Vinhomes has dropped to 3rd place with 12.7 billion USD. Another member of the “VinGroup” is Vincom Retail with a capitalization USD 3.2 billion.

Thus, the total capitalization of the 3 members of “VinGroup” amounted to USD 32.7 billion, equivalent to 16.9% of the total market.

4. The group accounting for an overwhelming portion in the billion-dollar list consists of 8 banks: Vietcombank (USD 15 billion), BIDV (USD 12.7 billion), Vietinbank (USD 4.1 billion), Techcombank (USD 3.7 billion), VPBank (USD 2.5 billion), MBBank (USD 2.2 billion), ACB (USD 1.8 billion) and HDBank (USD 1.2 billion).

This group has a total market capitalization of up to USD 40 billion, surpassing the “VinGroup” capitalization and accounting for 20.7% of Vietnam’s stock market capitalization.

It can be seen that the influence of banking stocks and VinGroup is very significant in Vietnam’s stock market.

5. The F&B industry has three representatives: Vinamilk (USD 9.1 billion), Sabeco (USD 6.4 billion) and Masan Consumer (USD 2.1 billion).
